Epochs of Style

How artistic movements from history find new life in the Brizo® portfolio

Wander through a gallery with an art history major, and they’ll tell you the roots of every work: a minimalist sculpture here, a Bauhaus chair there. They’ll find the influences behind colors, materials, form, and style—the way the past lives on through art.

Across our homes, those larger-than-life stories tell and retell themselves, whether or not we see them: a family heirloom, a vintage trend, an enduring force of style that keeps its charm season after season. Builders and designers alike return to history as a wellspring of ideas. For example, Chad Nightingale of Nightingale Co. says he draws inspiration from "the timeless structures and designs of the past."

Within the Brizo portfolio, we tell those stories through the lens of today: infusing the most beloved styles with a modern eye and a twist of timelessness.

Industrial Warmth

A powerful force in today’s design world—especially in trendy spaces like downtown coffee shops—industrial style reflects the influence of early twentieth-century factories and commercial buildings. It manifests in raw materials and rustic details, natural light and sleek accents.

That singular blend of chic and grunge led the Brizo design team to create the Artesso® Kitchen Collection. “It’s more rooted and traditional, but cleaned-up,” says Celine Kwok Garland, lead industrial designer for Brizo. The collection’s articulating arm, in particular, has its roots in the industrial desk lamp that most will remember from their college days. The collection lent its signature aesthetic to “Skyline Summit,” a family home designed by Lindsie Davis (Blueberry Jones Design). Part Palm Springs, part Hill Country, Davis said the built-from-scratch project is a nod to her love for playful, mid-century modern design.

“The lines of the faucet are so sculptural in nature—it’s a true work of art.”

“Early on in the initial design phase, I knew that Brizo would make an appearance in this home,” Davis says. “The collection’s industrial aesthetic was an ideal pairing for the simple, sleek kitchen design. The lines of the faucet are so sculptural in nature—it’s a true work of art.”

A Post-War Edge

After World War II tore the U.K. apart, the nation rebuilt with a fresh architectural perspective: brutalism. The style prioritizes structure above fine detail and makes for stark, evocative silhouettes.

The Brizo team brought that style into the modern eye with the Vettis® Bath Collection, taking that bare-bones, angular approach to the silhouettes—and even materials—in the collection. Garland says the collection proved the team was willing to stand out from other brands.

“It was really cool to see how Brizo took a different stance,” she says. “You have to break out of the corporate way people always do things. Vettis is just a little sturdier in its nature, in the negative space where water comes out.”

In her 2022 “Rock and Roll Transitional” project, Rainey Richardson (Rainey Richardson Interiors) sought the same edge. She wanted to match the drama and spectacle of the rock business, but leave center stage to the client’s huge collection of industry paraphernalia.

“We decided not to put concert posters in the primary bath, but we still wanted the space to
be edgy,” Richardson says. “We loved the Matte Black finish, and the Vettis Bath Collection had the weight and style we needed to stand up to the textured tile and countertops.”

A Lasting Moment

Of course, the beauty of history is that it’s still in the writing, even now. Today’s design movement, with all its clean, minimalist tendencies, is a key part of the tale.

Design’s today encourages us to declutter, to enjoy sunlight and open spaces, and to turn toward neutral palettes and natural materials. But it also invites us to experiment—to combine styles in whatever way feels right.

Designer Lyzz Hope of MOZ Interiors brought that curious attitude to her Ita lia Mod project this summer. “I wanted a soothing space with tranquil energy,” Hope says. “I was aiming for 1970s Italy with a modern angle.”

To complement the project’s blended style, she chose the Jason Wu for Brizo™ Bath Collection. “The designs are so sleek and sophisticated,” Hope says. “I love the faucet profiles and how they play along with all of the curves in modern design lately.”

From the dramatic to the understated, from the modern to the traditional and everywhere between, the Brizo portfolio offers a taste of the rich histories of art, architecture, and design, and gives them a timeless flair.

“Ultimately, we want a collection that can transcend two different trends, or design movements, or two different cultures,” Garland says. “But I think to move forward, you need to know your past.”
